As a new or soon-to-be parent, you may have become aware of the many safety concerns with regard to your newborn. The thought of a newborn’s fragility may be intimidating to some, but fear not as you have prepared for any situation concerning your little one’s safety.
From properly supporting your baby’s head and neck while handling them, making sure you alternate your infant sleeping position to prevent flat head syndrome to the benefits of breastfeeding instead of feeding your baby formula. The list goes on.
But, how do you wash your newborn’s clothes? Laundry, a monotonous task many of us execute without ever thinking about any safety concerns it may pose to an infant.
As dull as washing clothes may be, properly washing a baby’s clothes is a must!
With a little help from our team here at The Laughing Giraffe®, we have put together a list of tips on washing a baby’s clothes.
Baby Clothes Washing Tips for New Parents
Pre-Wash Baby Clothes
New clothes, whether purchased or hand-me-downs, should be washed. You have no knowledge of what might have come in contact with the clothes before you received them. A baby’s skin is significantly more sensitive, becoming irritated or developing a rash.
Choosing the Right Detergent
There are tons of brands to choose from at the supermarket, but a fragrance-free liquid detergent is the best option. Scented detergents may lead to irritated skin.
Isolate Baby’s Clothes
Unless you are willing to change the entire household over to a baby-safe detergent, washing your little one’s clothes separately can prevent skin irritation from harsh detergents used on adult clothes.
As you can see there is a pattern emerging – preventing skin irritation. As simple as washing clothes may seem, a baby’s onesie bodysuits, tiny shirts, blankets and socks should be cared for differently.
Let’s move on to our next topic.
Double Rinse
Consider a second rinse cycle when washing new clothes or to be sure all of the detergents is removed from the clothes.
Dry Everything Immediately
As soon as the wash cycle has completed, place all baby clothes into the dryer. Wet clothes left for hours in the washing machine can grow mildew or mold causing skin and health problems.
Laundry Care Symbols Chart
Before tossing any of the clothes into the washing machine check the label for proper washing care. Many of The Laughing Giraffe®’s baby clothes include special washing instructions that must be followed to prevent destroying a baby’s new outfit.
Our team has created a very easy-to-understand Laundry Care Symbols Chart. Feel free to download and print the chart for future use.
