Layettes can be purchased pre-made from brands or put together as a gift set. When choosing a layette, it’s recommended to select soft, comfortable fabrics with fasteners that close easily and finish seams. You can also consider slightly larger sizes (0 to 3 months) to account for rapid infant growth.
The term “layette” comes from the old French word Laie, which means “box”. It is believed to have come into use in the mid-19th century.
It includes everything you need to wrap your baby up for the first few months after birth so your baby can stay warm and safe without swaddling. A layette is typically made up of four items: a sleepsuit, sleep sack, diaper cover, bodysuit, and beanie hat. But it can also include other things like socks, booties, and hair accessories.
A onesie is a torso-covering baby bodysuit that is loosely fitted. Onesies are designed for babies to cover their diapers. It can be used as a diaper shirt or a creeper in addition to being comfortable sleepwear for children.
Some parents make the switch after their baby’s first birthday, while others wait closer to the second birthday because of comfort, convenience, or habit. There are no hard or fast rules when it comes to ditching the onesies or bodysuits, so just do what feels right to you and make the transition when you are ready.
When babies are born, they come out of a warm, cozy environment – the womb – and into one that can be downright chilly. That is why nurses immediately cover their tiny heads with those precious knit hats. But after your newborn leaves the hospital, they do not need to wear a hat all the time, unless it is cold outside.
Amber hats are for babies who may require a little more attention because they were born prematurely or low birth weight. These babies may need a little extra help with feeding or keeping warm. Green hats are for lower risk babies who require routine observations.
When to Stop Using a Sleep Sack & How to Transition
The AAP recommends using loose blankets in your child’s crib for the first year. Many parents tend to use sleep sacks up at least until their child’s first birthday and some use it well into toddlerhood.
